Our sleeping positions reveal our personalities

트로피이미지

Introduction
Can your sleeping position reveal your personality? There is research that suggests that your sleeping position has a connection to the way you think and behave. However, some disagree that there is a link between sleeping position and personality. Today our debaters will discuss whether our sleeping positions reveal our personalities.

Constructive
Debater 1 Henry

Our sleeping positions reveal our personalities. Professor Chris Idzikowski, director of the Sleep Assessment and Advisory Service in the United Kingdom, conducted research on the connection between sleeping position and personality. He studied six sleeping positions and discovered that each sleeping position is linked to a personality type. He also found that most people do not change their sleeping positions. Sleeping positions reveal our personalities because Dr. Chris Idzikowski is an expert on sleep.

Debater 2 Ashley
Our sleeping positions do not reveal our personalities. Dr. Idzikowski found his conclusions by surveying 1,004 British people about their sleeping positions and personality traits. He found evidence for a link between sleeping position and personality. However, it is not strong enough evidence to claim that our sleeping positions reveal our personalities. He did not get the same conclusions when he did the same survey with people in Southeast Asia.

Rebuttal
Debater 1 Henry

Dr. Idzikowski has written multiple books on sleep. He is an expert! Therefore, his research proves that there is a link between sleeping position and personality. Also, our body positions reflect our personalities. For example, the way that we move our hands when we speak or the way we position our bodies when we listen to others all indicate something about our personalities. It is the same with our sleeping positions.

Debater 2 Ashley
I acknowledge that Dr. Idzikowski found evidence of a link between our sleeping positions and personalities. However, you are basing your whole argument on the research of one professor. Just because Dr. Idzikowski is an expert on sleep does not mean that he is always right. The fact that he did not get the same results with people in Southeast Asia proves that there is no universal connection between sleeping position and personality.

Judge’s Comments
The winner of today’s debate is Ashley. She pointed out that Henry based his entire argument on the evidence of one professor. Henry also committed the fallacy of appeal to authority. A debater commits this fallacy when they claim that their point is correct because an authority says that it is correct.
